Understanding Joshua’s Law: What Your Family Needs to Know
Joshua’s Law requires all Georgia teens under 18 to complete an approved driver’s education course to get their license. This includes 30 hours of classroom or online instruction and 6 hours (optional) of behind-the-wheel training with a certified instructor.

Students must have their permit for 1 year and 1 day and Joshua’s Law before obtaining their license.

*Joshua’s Law is named in honor of Joshua Brown, a Georgia teen who tragically lost his life in a car accident in 2003. His parents advocated for stronger driver education requirements to help prevent similar tragedies. As a result, Georgia passed Joshua’s Law, which requires all 16- and 17-year-olds to complete an approved driver’s education course before obtaining their license.
